Pundit Backs Tottenham to Sign In-Form Midfielder with Pre-Agreed Transfer Fee

As part of the agreement that facilitated Giovani Lo Celso’s return to Real Betis last summer, Tottenham secured a €25 million purchase option for Johnny Cardoso.

With the summer transfer window approaching, speculation is growing over whether Spurs will activate the clause to sign the American international.

Former USMNT striker and pundit Charlie Davies strongly believes Tottenham will take up the option, particularly given Cardoso’s impressive performances in La Liga.

He highlighted the midfielder’s recent standout display against Real Madrid, where he scored in a crucial victory, as further proof of his rising stature.

Davies emphasized that the 23-year-old’s ability to compete at the highest level, along with his consistency throughout the season, makes him an excellent addition for Spurs.

He also noted that the pre-agreed transfer fee represents a bargain, especially considering Cardoso’s current trajectory.

While Tottenham already have young midfield prospects like Lucas Bergvall, Davies believes Cardoso has the qualities to succeed in the Premier League.

Speaking on the Call It What You Want podcast, Davies shared his thoughts:

“I do. I think they go for it. When you score against Real Madrid, it only boosts your value.

It proves you can handle the biggest matches against the toughest opponents. So, yes, I think this clause is a great opportunity for Tottenham.

“I definitely see Spurs taking it because, for the price, it’s a steal considering how well he’s performed in La Liga this season. The only question is how they use him.

They already have Bergvall, the 19-year-old Swedish international, who’s been getting a lot of minutes.

“I really like his game. They’re not exactly the same type of player, but still, I’d love to see Cardoso get a chance in the Premier League. At the same time, he’s on a great run with Betis.”

Cardoso Shines in La Liga

Johnny Cardoso has continued his steady rise since making his professional debut with Internacional in Brazil.

He joined Real Betis in December 2023 on a five-year contract and has quickly established himself as a key player under Manuel Pellegrini.

This season, he has featured in 32 matches across all competitions, contributing two goals and an assist.

Despite Betis extending Cardoso’s contract until 2030 last month, signaling their intent to keep him, Tottenham retain the right to secure his transfer if they trigger the purchase option.

With the summer window fast approaching, Spurs will soon have to decide whether to bring Cardoso to North London.
