Paul Robinson says Sean Dyche left Everton fans "sick and tired" of the football before being replaced by David Moyes.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (11 January, 19:31), revealed that Everton’s defeat to Bournemouth on 4 January was the breaking point for many fans, especially with the team failing to register a single shot on target.
Sean Dyche, who had managed to secure Premier League survival for Everton in the past two seasons, was dismissed by The Friedkin Group with six months remaining on his contract.
“He’s faced a lot of adversity,” Robinson admitted. “But you can understand the frustration of Everton supporters with the style of football.
Traveling all the way to Bournemouth only to see the team fail to get a single shot on target is tough. While there was defensive stability, the fans grew tired of the lackluster football.”
David Moyes returns for long-term Everton project
Under Moyes, Everton once enjoyed consistent European football, which aligns with the Friedkins’ vision for the club following their takeover.
While Dyche was effective in guiding the team to survival, the owners clearly have higher ambitions, with Everton currently just one point above the relegation zone.
Moyes, who demonstrated his European credentials with West Ham’s 2023 UEFA Conference League triumph, is seen as the ideal candidate to lead the Toffees forward.
West Ham, meanwhile, have struggled since his departure, with Julen Lopetegui, his replacement, dismissed a day before Dyche.
Moyes was clear he would not take on the role as a short-term fix. Instead, he secured a multi-year contract, signaling his commitment to a long-term project at Everton.
The club is now set to move to Bramley-Moore Dock under Moyes’ leadership—something that seemed improbable when he left Everton in 2013 to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, ending an impressive 11-year tenure.
