Pundit claims Spurs star lacks strong leadership qualities, describing him as too ‘erratic’ to serve as captain.

Cristian Romero, Tottenham’s vice-captain, stepped up to lead the team after usual captain Heung-Min Son sustained a hamstring injury during Tottenham’s victory over Qarabag.

Romero took on the captain’s armband for the match against Brighton last weekend (The Athletic).

While Romero has previously led Spurs to two key victories, including a notable 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, his performance in the Brighton match drew criticism.

His failure to mark his man for Brighton’s winning goal raised doubts about his ability to serve as an effective captain.

Troy Deeney, speaking on the Up Front podcast, questioned Romero’s leadership, citing his ill-discipline.

Deeney remarked, “I wouldn’t call Romero a leader… he’s too erratic, like Martinez at United.

Good in the tackle, but he’ll get sent off a couple of times this year.” Simon Jordan also expressed skepticism, asking, “Romero?”

However, despite these criticisms, Romero’s discipline has actually been exemplary this season.

While fans and pundits have been critical of his defensive errors, particularly his failure to track runners in games against Leicester and Brighton, Romero has yet to receive a booking in his eight appearances this season.

This marks a significant improvement from last season, where he had already collected two yellow cards by this stage (TransferMarkt).
