However, pundit Don Hutchison remains skeptical about Werner’s ability to improve and turn his performances around.
Hutchison Criticizes Tottenham’s Decision
Hutchison has been vocal about his disapproval of Spurs’ decision to extend Werner’s loan spell last summer after his lackluster performances during the latter half of the previous season.
He believes Postecoglou would be better off allocating minutes to younger talents like Mikey Moore instead of continuing to bet on Werner.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Hutchison remarked:
“Just a weird signing. Tottenham knew what they were getting when they signed him on loan in the summer. What was the point? He didn’t do particularly well last season.
They could have given that job to Mikey Moore or a young player coming through. I just didn’t see the point in the signing. And then when he plays, he doesn’t impress.”
A Glimmer of Promise Against Man City
Despite criticism, Werner showed his potential in Tottenham’s clash against Manchester City.
Coming off the bench, he outpaced Kyle Walker with blistering speed, delivered a perfect assist for Brennan Johnson, and demonstrated what he’s capable of when at his best.
Performances like this hint at the quality he can bring, even if inconsistently.
Future Uncertain for Werner
Tottenham have the option to sign Werner permanently for £8.5m next summer, but this seems highly unlikely given his performances.
According to Alasdair Gold, Spurs cannot terminate Werner’s loan early, meaning he will remain with the club until the season’s end.
With no other option, Tottenham fans might need to rally behind Werner and hope he can deliver more moments like his contribution against Man City over the next six months.
