Pundit Raises Doubts Over the “Quality” of Leeds United’s New Signings

Leeds United currently sits in fourth place in the Championship following back-to-back victories against Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City.

Goals from Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph secured a 2-0 win in their latest match at Elland Road.

The summer transfer window for Leeds has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the club’s business while others criticized both the board and manager Daniel Farke.

Leeds United’s Transfer Business

This summer, Leeds lost several key players, including Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, and Crysencio Summerville.

Some might argue that Leeds did well to raise up to €120 million from the sales of these young talents.

Additionally, the club saw the departures of Luis Sinisterra and Glenn Kamara, both of whom were reliable options last season.

In terms of incoming players, Leeds signed Joe Rodon on a permanent deal and brought in Largie Ramazani, Jayden Bogle, and Ao Tanaka, while also securing Manor Solomon on loan.

BBC Leeds journalist Adam Pope expressed skepticism about the club’s transfer business, noting uncertainty about the quality of the new signings:

“We often use this expression about the signings being in isolation, or the sales being in isolation, or results in isolation,” Pope stated on his podcast.

“I still stand by it, I think the window is a little bit underwhelming because we just don’t know about the quality of the players and how they will perform.

However, on first sight, hopefully, the recruitment team have brought in players who will adapt quickly to this level.”

A Confusing End to the Transfer Window

Despite securing the signings of Solomon, Tanaka, and Schmidt in the final week of the transfer window, Leeds United saw several potential deals fall through.

A rumored move for Burnley winger Manuel Benson did not materialize, and neither did the pursuit of SC Freiburg forward Roland Sallai.

This was particularly disappointing given reports that Daniel Farke had hoped to add at least one or two more players to his squad.

As Leeds heads into the new season, they rely on Patrick Bamford as the backup striker behind Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe.

Former footballer Frank McAvennie voiced concern over Bamford’s ability to lead Leeds back to the Premier League:

“He’s been their main man for ages, but can he still do that? From what I’ve seen of Patrick, I don’t think so, unless he steps up,” McAvennie said.

“He’s not shown me that he can score 20 goals this year, and unless he can, or they bring someone in who can, Leeds won’t be back in the Premier League next year.”
