Graham Potter remains a smooth talker. West Ham’s manager is adept at delivering composed, management-style briefings before each game, usually calm unless rattled by a heavy defeat.
Yet when discussing his players’ mindset, Potter should acknowledge that many of the difficulties have been of his own making.
“It’s an important game for us,” he told the media ahead of Saturday’s 5.30pm clash. “There was a determination [against Nottingham Forest] from the players that was born from frustration, disappointment and anger about how the first two games had gone.”
But much of that “frustration, disappointment and anger” stemmed from Potter’s own choices—negative set-ups, team selections relying on personnel who had already failed, and an overreliance on his favoured five-at-the-back system with two up top.
Only when he abandoned that cautious approach did results improve.
It was as if he had finally released the handbrake. Supporters, who pay to see bold and attacking football, will demand more of the same.
After last season’s lifeless campaign, where both players and fans seemed desperate for the season to end, the West Ham faithful will not tolerate another repeat.
That “determination” Potter refers to must be evident again—this time not just from the players, but from the manager himself.
He must set the tone with an aggressive game plan from the outset.
Retreating into a defensive shell against Tottenham will draw fury from the stands, and rightly so.
Potter now has the squad to be more adventurous. Summerville has returned to fitness, Mateus Fernandes has already caught the eye, while Magassa and Potts provide youthful energy, pace and bite that were missing in midfield.
With those options, there is little justification for reverting to that suffocating five-man back line which leaves the team clinging on without an outlet.
If West Ham are to move forward, their manager must embrace bravery rather than caution. The supporters will settle for nothing less.
