Glasgow Rangers are reportedly locked in a three-way battle to secure the signing of an “aggressive” Premier League defender this summer, with journalist Santi Aouna providing the latest update on their transfer push.

Martin encouraged by Rangers’ cup victory

The Gers picked up a 4-2 win at Ibrox against Alloa Athletic in the second round of the Scottish League Cup on Saturday.

While some supporters were not entirely convinced by the display, manager Russell Martin took plenty of encouragement from the performance and highlighted positives for his squad moving forward.

“There will be a lot of players who finish the day in a much better place than they were before,” Martin reflected after the game.

“They have now got some minutes under their belts and there will be a lot of learning for them.

I’m happy we won and that we are through because these matches can be tricky. Of course, there is a lot still to improve, but that excites me.

“I think there was a lot of good intention from the players. Many of them really tried to put into practice the things we’ve been working on, and while plenty of areas still need polishing, there’s also much to be pleased with.

These players have been supporting the ones who’ve featured most so far this season, and today they deserved their chance. I believe many of them will come out of this in a stronger place.”

Martin will be aware, however, that further reinforcements remain vital before the transfer window closes. Left-back is seen as a particular priority, especially with Jefte expected to depart.

The Rangers boss has already confirmed his admiration for Brentford youngster Jayden Meghoma, but he is not the only full-back on the shortlist.

Rangers eye Premier League defender Alex Moreno

According to Aouna, Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno has emerged as another target for Rangers.

The Spaniard, however, is also attracting firm interest from Real Betis—who are currently favourites to bring him back to La Liga—while Girona are monitoring developments as well.

Moreno, now 32, could represent a marquee signing for the Gers should they succeed. Since joining Villa, he has amassed 55 Premier League appearances and showcased his ability to compete at the highest level.

His experience and quality have also drawn praise from Villa boss Unai Emery, who previously described him as a dynamic full-back capable of pushing high up the pitch and making a difference in the attacking third.

Emery once noted: “In the attacking third, he is getting into the box and finding not only crosses, but passes as well.

I like to use Moreno higher because he is aggressive in attack and offers us that extra dimension.”

While his current £35,000-a-week wages may make a move ambitious for Rangers, landing Moreno would be a significant coup.

If that deal proves out of reach, Martin and the club are expected to continue their search, with alternatives such as Meghoma still firmly in the frame.
