Rangers must pay £5m for “incredible” summer target amid managerial change
Rangers will need to pay £5 million if they hope to sign one of their key summer transfer targets, according to a new report.
A period of change is underway at Ibrox, with Kevin Thelwell officially beginning his role as Rangers’ new sporting director following his move from Everton.
At the same time, the search for a new manager is nearing its conclusion, with several high-profile names previously linked.
Speaking after his appointment, Thelwell acknowledged the pressing need to appoint a new head coach:
“While there has been significant work going on in the background prior to my arrival, that naturally accelerates from today.
Top of the priority list will be the appointment of a new Head Coach for our men’s first-team.
That search has been progressing well, and the club and I look forward to bringing that to a conclusion in the coming days.”
Though a final decision is yet to be announced, it now appears likely that former Southampton boss Russell Martin will take over the reins.
Other contenders, including Davide Ancelotti, Steven Gerrard, and Francesco Farioli, were also linked, but Martin has reportedly emerged as the top choice.
Assuming Martin is appointed, he’ll be eager to make an impact in the transfer market, and one player could become his first signing at Ibrox.
Rangers and 49ers Enterprises eye Metinho deal
According to The Daily Record, Rangers and their partners 49ers Enterprises must pay £5m to sign Troyes midfielder Metinho this summer.
The French side originally signed the Brazilian-born midfielder from Fluminense in 2021 for £4m and are now looking to sell him before his contract expires in 2026.
With just one year left on his current deal, Troyes are reportedly open to offloading the 22-year-old to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.
Rangers had already identified Metinho as a target before Thelwell’s arrival, and an approach for the player has been made.
Metinho, who was born in DR Congo, is a highly promising talent. He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Swiss club Basel, registering two assists in 14 appearances.
Scout Jacek Kulig has described him as an “incredible” player, underscoring his potential to make an impact at Ibrox.
Primarily a central midfielder, Metinho is also capable of playing further forward, offering tactical versatility.
His availability and expiring contract could provide Rangers with an opportunity to secure him for a reasonable fee—possibly less than the £5m asking price if Troyes become eager to sell.
Should Russell Martin take charge soon, Metinho could be a standout addition aspart of a new era at Ibrox.
