Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is reportedly edging closer to finalising a new deal with the north London side.
The Uruguayan international has been a regular under Thomas Frank this season, starting four Premier League matches and coming off the bench once more.
He also featured in the Carabao Cup, helping Spurs to a 3-0 victory over Doncaster, and played the full 90 minutes in the Champions League win against Villarreal.
Since joining from Juventus in January 2021, the 28-year-old has become a mainstay in Tottenham’s midfield, amassing 121 appearances, scoring nine goals, and providing eight assists.
Although he endured a nine-month spell on the sidelines with a serious ACL injury in 2023, Bentancur has re-established himself as a crucial figure in Frank’s system.
Previously, he thrived under Antonio Conte and was vital to Spurs’ Europa League triumph last season, making 13 appearances across the campaign, including the final against Manchester United.
With his current contract set to expire next summer, Football London reports that Spurs are keen to secure his long-term future.
Having recently tied Cristian Romero to an extended deal, the club view Bentancur as the next key player to be rewarded.
Talks between the two parties are said to be progressing well, with an agreement close that would keep him at the club for several more years.
Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma looks set to depart. The Malian midfielder’s contract also runs out next summer, but unlike Bentancur, Tottenham have little desire to retain him.
Bissouma had been linked with a summer move away, with Galatasaray showing interest, though a deal failed to materialise.
Spurs were still open to selling him permanently later in the window, ideally to a Saudi Pro League side, but a knee injury halted any potential transfer.
For Spurs, securing Bentancur’s future while preparing for Bissouma’s likely exit appears central to their midfield planning.
