Jordan Henderson, the experienced England international with over 400 Premier League appearances, may be set for a return to the United Kingdom this summer.

The 34-year-old midfielder is currently contracted to Dutch giants Ajax, with one year remaining on his deal.

However, his future in Amsterdam appears uncertain. According to journalist Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf (25 May), Ajax are eager to offload Henderson’s wages as part of a summer clear-out.

Verweij claims there has been internal conflict at the club, with former manager Francesco Farioli reportedly keen to retain the ex-Liverpool captain, while the hierarchy wanted him gone.

The disagreement ultimately led to Farioli’s departure, further casting doubt on Henderson’s position at the club.

Henderson himself has hinted that his future is unclear, which has only intensified speculation about a move back to the UK.

Two clubs believed to be in the mix for his signature are Sunderland—his boyhood team—and Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

Speaking on De Telegraaf’s podcast, Verweij suggested Henderson’s return to British football is likely. “He is also being linked with Rangers,” he said.

“Steven Gerrard is rumoured to be returning as their manager and would like to bring Henderson with him. But Sunderland is his former club, and it’s telling that he was recently spotted in the stands.

Ajax want to get rid of his salary—that’s one of the core issues that created tension between the club and Farioli. Now that Farioli has left, Henderson may be inclined to follow suit.

He felt supported under the manager. The door is certainly open for a move to one of those two clubs.”

Although Gerrard is reportedly interested in reuniting with Henderson at Rangers, the possibility of him returning to Ibrox as manager appears slim.

Instead, Davide Ancelotti—son of legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti—is emerging as a top candidate to take over the managerial role.

Henderson could provide valuable leadership and depth to Rangers’ midfield, but his age and salary could pose concerns for a manager intent on building a younger, more dynamic squad.

Should Ancelotti Jr. take the helm, his recruitment approach would likely be influenced by his father’s tactical philosophy.

He would be expected to prioritise technically gifted, versatile players in their mid-20s who can function as box-to-box or attacking midfielders within a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 setup.

These midfielders would need to excel in passing, tactical awareness, and high pressing—crucial qualities in a system designed to maintain possession and control the tempo.

Ancelotti’s focus would likely be on players who can contribute goals, maintain a high work rate, and provide the creativity needed for Rangers to dominate domestically and compete effectively in Europe.
