Ridvan Yilmaz agrees move back to Besiktas as Rangers push to ease financial burden
Rangers have completed the sale of Jefte to Palmeiras for a substantial fee and are now aiming to offload other fringe players from the squad.
One of those departures is edging closer, with Besiktas finally set to re-sign Ridvan Yilmaz after lengthy negotiations.
The 24-year-old, who struggled to make a meaningful impact during his three years in Glasgow, is preparing to return to more familiar surroundings.
According to Rangers Review on 23 August, Yilmaz has already bid farewell to teammates at Ibrox ahead of undergoing his medical in Istanbul.
Both clubs have reportedly agreed a transfer fee in the region of £2m for the Turkiye international, who initially cost the Gers around £3.4m when he joined in 2022. His current deal had been due to run until 2027.
Despite not fulfilling expectations, Yilmaz’s adaptability and attacking contributions from full-back will be missed at Ibrox.
Manager Russell Martin effectively sealed the defender’s fate earlier this summer when he excluded him from his plans and controversially handed his shirt number to Max Aarons.
However, the Bournemouth loanee’s deployment on the left side of defence has not gone smoothly, leaving Rangers short of balance in the back line.
Youngster Jayden Meghoma offered promise in his debut during the Champions League play-off against Club Brugge, although the Light Blues fell to a 3-1 defeat in the first leg.
The teenager remains untested at the highest level, and it is uncertain whether he can handle the responsibility of being first choice.
Elsewhere, James Tavernier is expected to reclaim his place at right-back following Aarons’ struggles, while Dujon Sterling could provide depth once he returns from injury.
Even so, another specialist left-back is now a pressing priority after the exits of both Jefte and Yilmaz.
Director of Football Recruitment Kevin Thelwell has endured mixed results so far this summer, and Martin will be eager for more reliable reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
With gaps still evident across the squad, defensive upgrades will be crucial if Rangers are to remain competitive on domestic and European fronts.
