With less than a fortnight left in the summer transfer window, Rangers have reportedly made their first official enquiry in a bid to bring a Premier League title-winner to Ibrox for Russell Martin.
Rangers humbled by clinical Club Brugge
Going into their Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge, there was genuine hope among the Ibrox faithful that the Scottish giants could once again produce one of those famous European nights.
However, any sense of optimism quickly evaporated in the opening 20 minutes as the Belgian side ruthlessly raced into a 3-0 lead.
Rangers were left stunned and, despite their efforts, now face a monumental challenge if they are to overturn the deficit and keep their European dreams alive.
Danilo’s strike in the second half provided a glimmer of belief and at least gives Martin’s men something to cling onto ahead of the second leg in Belgium.
The forward emphasised Rangers’ determination to keep fighting, telling reporters:
“It’s not the way we wanted to start, but there is still everything to play for. We don’t want to concede soft goals, but it’s on us to change and improve. The fans deserve better, and hopefully we can deliver.”
Although his goal may not have changed the outcome of the first leg, Danilo insisted that it has instilled renewed belief.
He reiterated that Rangers, regardless of circumstance, will always fight until the very end.
Transfer market response – Premier League winner targeted
The heavy defeat may well push the Gers back into the transfer market, and reports suggest the club are looking to add a proven, high-profile striker before the window closes.
According to the Daily Mail, Rangers have approached former Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy to explore the possibility of bringing him to Glasgow.
The 38-year-old striker, who famously fired Leicester to their stunning Premier League title in 2016, is currently without a club after departing the Foxes at the end of last season.
Despite his age, Vardy remains a sought-after free agent with multiple clubs across Europe reportedly interested in his services, including Rangers’ fiercest rivals Celtic.
For Martin and his recruitment team, signing Vardy would be a statement move. The veteran netted 10 goals in all competitions last season for a struggling Leicester side that ultimately dropped out of the top flight.
His pace may have waned slightly, but his sharp finishing, relentless work ethic, and winning mentality could still make him a valuable addition to Rangers’ squad as they chase domestic glory and European progression.
Praise for Vardy’s enduring quality
Vardy continues to receive widespread recognition for his achievements. Former Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy highlighted his incredible milestone last season:
“If you score your 200th goal on your 500th appearance, then you are a great one. Jamie has been a unique player and character for Leicester City.
Years from now, people will look back and realise just how special he was. He’s not only a goalscorer, but also a leader and a captain.”
Meanwhile, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, who managed Vardy during his Leicester tenure, praised the striker while keeping transfer speculation at arm’s length:
“I wouldn’t speak about any individual player. Jamie was brilliant for me during my time at Leicester. There are always names being mentioned, but I wouldn’t confirm anything.”
Whether Rangers can beat Celtic and others to Vardy’s signature remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: adding a proven Premier League winner could give Russell Martin’s side a much-needed boost as they look to bounce back from their European setback.
