Russell Martin leads Rangers through hectic deadline day as club seeks fresh momentum
Nico Raskin’s future at Rangers was uncertain throughout the summer transfer window, but he will remain at Ibrox until at least January after the market closed late on 1 September.
The Belgian midfielder attracted interest from Crystal Palace, Wolves, and several other clubs, yet Rangers held firm, demanding a significant fee.
Ultimately, no agreement was reached, leaving Raskin still part of the Rangers squad for now.
According to Belgian outlet HLN, Raskin had internally raised the possibility of leaving multiple times during the window. Wolves were indeed among the clubs keen on him, but no deal materialised.
The report further notes that Raskin now intends to clear the air with manager Russell Martin once he returns from international duty with Belgium next week.
Tensions between player and manager have already been highlighted. Raskin was left out of the squad for the Old Firm derby against Celtic, a match that ended goalless and only added to the pressure surrounding Martin.
To make matters worse, Raskin’s father criticised Martin in a social media post—later deleted—claiming the Rangers boss “had too big of an ego.”
With Raskin currently away with Belgium, Martin will hope to ease tensions when the midfielder returns, as Rangers face a demanding September schedule.
Since arriving from Standard Liege in 2023, Raskin has been a key figure for the club. The 24-year-old played a pivotal role during the 2024/25 campaign, showcasing his work rate and consistency in midfield.
Given his importance, Rangers may once again need to fend off interest when the January window opens.
On the international front, Raskin is chasing a personal milestone. Despite making four senior appearances, he is still searching for his first goal for Belgium.
He has previously scored twice at U23 level, but he has yet to replicate that at senior level.
Belgium face Liechtenstein and Kazakhstan in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, matches that could present Raskin with valuable minutes and an opportunity to break his duck.
