West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui is reportedly planning to add significant experience to the squad this summer. With a budget of around £90 million, excluding player sales, Lopetegui faces the challenge of strengthening nearly every department of the team.
The 57-year-old Spaniard is allegedly focusing on reinforcing the central defense and center-forward positions. Given the numerous players rumored to be leaving the London Stadium, an active transfer window is expected. Securing a new center-back, a proven striker, and a fast winger are top priorities for Lopetegui.
Contrary to these priorities, recent reports suggest the Hammers are targeting a different area on the pitch. They are linked with a move for a highly experienced 36-year-old.
West Ham is reportedly in advanced talks to sign Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme. Additionally, Turkish left-back Ferdi Kadioglu is also on their radar. While these players are under 24, Lopetegui aims to balance youth with experience.
According to a report from The Sun (print edition, June 2nd, page 60), West Ham is now looking to sign Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. Begovic, who won the Premier League with Chelsea in the 2016/17 season, brings substantial experience. The Bosnia international, available on a free transfer following his release from QPR, has played 451 senior games, conceding 581 goals and keeping 128 clean sheets (Transfermarkt).
Signing Begovic as a third-choice goalkeeper on a short-term deal seems like a smart move for West Ham. However, the prospect of him playing regularly under Lopetegui next season is not desirable.
