Rangers Takeover Progressing Amid Season Struggles
Rangers continue to face challenges both on and off the pitch.
They suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final in December and currently trail their rivals by 16 points in the Scottish Premiership.
Following Philippe Clement’s sacking last month, former captain Barry Ferguson has taken charge on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Meanwhile, the club’s ownership situation is undergoing significant changes, with the 49ers Enterprises-backed takeover reportedly moving forward.
49ers Enterprises Closing in on Majority Takeover
Reports suggest that a deal has been agreed in principle for the US consortium—led by Leeds United chairman and health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh—to secure a majority stake in Rangers.
Their goal is to acquire at least 51% of the club’s shares and take control of the Ibrox boardroom.
Finance expert Stefan Borson, speaking to Football Insider, urged caution regarding the latest developments, stating he would wait for an official confirmation before taking the reports at face value.
Currently, former chairman Dave King holds the largest individual stake at 13%, while various minority shareholders control the remaining shares.
Takeover Announcement Expected Soon
Borson believes the Rangers takeover will likely be finalized once the current season concludes.
He explained:
“I don’t understand why there hasn’t been a public announcement yet, given how widely this has been discussed.
I’d take the reports with a pinch of salt until formal confirmation is given.
However, it seems likely the deal will be completed in the close season, in preparation for next season.
An announcement could come earlier, but full completion will likely wait until after the season ends.”
Rangers Secure £15m Europa League Windfall
Rangers have guaranteed themselves a £15 million financial boost from their Europa League campaign after automatically qualifying for the last 16.
Under former boss Clement, the team finished eighth in the competition’s revamped league phase before his departure.
Interim manager Ferguson then guided the side to a stunning 3-1 first-leg victory over José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on 6 March.
Rangers will host the Turkish club at Ibrox on 13 March, aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
