The host of the well-regarded Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall may see his opportunities at Tottenham diminish after Christmas.
This season, Bergvall has made 13 appearances under Ange Postecoglou, including four starts in the UEFA Europa League and one in the Carabao Cup.
However, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham suggested that the young Swede should consider a loan move for the second half of the campaign.
“I think Bergvall is now familiar with life at Tottenham and understands how things work here,” Wenham said.
“But after Christmas, I expect his game time will decrease as Spurs field stronger squads for the latter stages of the Europa League.”
Wenham emphasized the importance of a loan spell in England, stating: “He needs the opportunity to establish himself in English football.
Making the jump from Sweden to the Premier League at 18 is a huge step, and consistent minutes at another club could aid his development.”
Why a Loan Move Makes Sense
Bergvall is undoubtedly a promising talent, but he is unlikely to break into Tottenham’s starting XI in the Premier League anytime soon.
Moreover, with Spurs expected to play fewer matches as the season progresses, opportunities may dry up, particularly in high-stakes knockout games in the Europa League, Carabao Cup, or FA Cup.
Sitting on the bench for extended periods will do little to aid the midfielder’s growth.
A loan move would allow Bergvall to gain valuable experience and playing time, as has been the case for other young Spurs players who have thrived in similar situations.
Ensuring the Right Loan Destination
For a loan to be successful, Tottenham must carefully select a club where Bergvall will play regularly.
It’s crucial that any move comes with assurances of adequate game time, as sending him out only for him to remain on the sidelines would be counterproductive.
If Spurs manage to secure the right fit, a loan move could accelerate Bergvall’s development and better prepare him for future contributions in North London.
