Last summer, Rangers explored the possibility of signing Adama Traore for £3.5 million and were reportedly in “advanced stages” of negotiations with Ferencvaros. Now, the Hungarian club is urging him to leave.
Rangers Target Adama Traore Set to Depart Ferencvaros
At 29, Traore might not fit the typical profile of a club focusing on player development and resale value.
However, not every signing needs to be a long-term project—sometimes, acquiring immediate first-team quality is essential.
For Rangers, this necessity is even more pronounced with Vaclav Cerny expected to return to Wolfsburg.
Reports suggesting a £5.5 million option to buy have been dismissed, though the club remains in discussions to sign him permanently.
Traore, a like-for-like replacement for Cerny, has received backing from former Mali international Harouna Diarra, who told Metropol:
“He has excelled in Eastern Europe with Tiraspol and Ferencváros, but now he must aim for one last big contract. If his current club makes him a good offer, he can stay, otherwise, he will have to look for something better.”
Despite limited appearances for Ferencvaros recently—possibly due to his reluctance to sign a new contract—Traore showcased his ability with a stunning Europa League goal.
Should Rangers Be Concerned About Traore’s Injury History?
Injury concerns surrounded Traore last summer, but he is on track to play 50 games this season. While the 2023/24 campaign was disrupted, he barely missed a game in 2022/23.
The ideal scenario would be securing both Cerny and Traore.
One of Celtic’s biggest advantages over Rangers is their ability to rotate wingers, ensuring freshness and selecting players based on form. In contrast, Rangers have often been forced to field whoever is available.
With Traore available on a free transfer, he could be an early signing that not only strengthens the squad but also gives recruitment chief Nils Koppen more time to focus on other key areas.
