Multiple reports indicate that the former White Sox closer has reached an agreement with the Red Sox on a two-year contract. The deal is valued at a guaranteed $10 million and includes the potential for an additional $10 million in incentives. Additionally, there’s a mutual option for the 2026 season.
Liam Hendriks, 34, made a comeback to the White Sox’s active roster in May, featuring in five games after successfully overcoming non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma earlier in the year. Having disclosed his cancer diagnosis in January, Hendriks shared his cancer-free status in April, marking the completion of his treatment.
During this season, the right-hander achieved a record of 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA (3 ER/5.0 IP), one save, and three strikeouts before undergoing ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery in August. The current recovery estimate places Hendriks on the sidelines for approximately 12-14 months, making a return likely in the 2025 season. Consequently, the White Sox opted not to exercise their $15 million option on Hendriks for the 2024 season, allowing him to become a free agent.
Hendriks, nominated for the 2023 Roberto Clemente Award, contributed significantly to lymphoma research by raising nearly $130,000 through the sale of “Close Out Cancer” t-shirts. He also visited cancer patients and their families during the regular season, both at Guaranteed Rate Field and on the road.
