Italian media reports suggest that AS Roma is willing to let Tammy Abraham go, with Everton showing interest. Despite the £20m price tag, Everton appears undeterred.
According to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport (10 August, page 5), Everton’s pursuit of Abraham has been intense and longstanding.
This interest has seemingly influenced Roma’s manager, Daniele De Rossi, who is now reportedly open to the idea of Abraham leaving this summer.
After an injury-plagued stint in Italy, a return to England under Sean Dyche’s leadership might be beneficial for Abraham, potentially helping him regain form, much like Dominic Calvert-Lewin did.
Is Tammy Abraham better than Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
Tammy Abraham was described as a ‘superb centre forward’ by football talent scout Jacek Kulig when he first moved to Rome, and his early performances justified this praise.
Under Jose Mourinho, Abraham scored 27 goals in all competitions and provided five assists, helping Roma achieve European success in the Conference League.
However, a poorly-timed ACL injury has significantly set back his progress. At 26 years old, Abraham still has time on his side, but his injury history is a concern.
Everton’s Director of Football, Kevin Thelwell, must consider this, especially given the difficulties in managing Calvert-Lewin’s health, who now seems eager to leave.
During his time at Chelsea in the Premier League, Abraham’s standout season was in 2019/20 under Frank Lampard, where he scored 15 goals. Since moving to Rome, he has further developed his game.
In contrast, Calvert-Lewin’s best season came in 2020/21, with a 15-goal haul that he has yet to replicate.
Should Calvert-Lewin depart from Everton, Abraham would be a suitable replacement.
