Report: Club prioritize new contract for ‘aggressive’ defender amid Leeds United interest
Leeds United linked with Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin as potential long-term left-back solution ahead of January transfer window
With Junior Firpo frequently sidelined due to injuries, currently serving a four-game suspension, and his contract set to expire at season’s end, Leeds United are reportedly exploring left-back alternatives.
Graeme Bailey shared with LeedsUnited.News that Firpo’s future with Leeds may hinge on whether Daniel Farke can secure promotion this season. Leeds currently sit third in the Championship.
However, if Firpo does not renew his contract, Leeds will likely seek a long-term replacement, with Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin emerging as a potential target for a January move.
Cirkin, praised by Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray as “aggressive,” has excelled since joining Sunderland from Tottenham and was instrumental in their promotion to the Championship.
Now in his second season in England’s second tier, Cirkin continues to impress and even scored recently.
He’s tallied 10 goals and assists in 51 games for Sunderland.
With Leeds reportedly interested, Sunderland is prioritizing a new contract for the 22-year-old, whose current deal expires in 2026.
The Echo reports that Sunderland is eager to secure Cirkin’s future soon amid transfer links.
When comparing Cirkin and Firpo’s Championship experience, Cirkin is five years younger but has matched Firpo’s level of play in the league.
Firpo, who entered the Championship following Leeds’ relegation in 2023, and Cirkin, who entered via Sunderland’s promotion the same year, have similar stats in terms of goals, assists, clean sheets, and wins.
If Leeds are seeking a younger, proven left-back in the Championship, Cirkin could be an ideal choice.
His defensive abilities, Championship experience, and potential make him an appealing option to succeed Firpo, should Leeds aim for a permanent solution on the left side of their defense.
