Opinion: Everton move for midfield ‘Machine’ is ideal after Dyche’s comments

Dyche has admitted that his next Everton signing will need Premier League experience (Liverpool ECHO, 4 August).

Given Everton’s strategy of targeting promising players coming off poor seasons, as seen with Iliman Ndiaye and Jasper Lindstrom, Kalvin Phillips fits the bill.

The 28-year-old was once described as a “machine” by former Blues boss Frank Lampard for his performances with England at Euro 2020.

He became a regular for his country during his time at Leeds United but has struggled since his move to Manchester City.

Since arriving in 2022, Phillips has made 31 appearances for the Premier League champions and had an underwhelming loan spell at West Ham United last season.

Everton should make a move for the forgotten man, Kalvin Phillips. Once an England regular and now on the fringes of Man City, desperate for a move to revitalise his career, a switch to Goodison Park could be the perfect solution.

Everton need more midfielders, with James Garner absent from the 3-0 victory against Preston and 34-year-old Idrissa Gueye being the only other senior option in that department.

Dyche has had to navigate the transfer market carefully due to Everton’s high-profile struggles with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50m helped ease the financial burden, but the Blues must spend within their limits to avoid further PSR sanctions.

Phillips could be available for a loan move, which would suit all parties. Including an option to buy in the deal would be ideal for the club.

At 28, Phillips is entering his prime years and still has plenty to offer. He would bring Champions League experience to Goodison Park and be eager to revive his once-promising career.

This deal is a no-brainer for Everton, and if Dyche can help Phillips replicate his form from his time at Leeds, it could prove to be the best deal the club has made in a long time.
