Everton’s Bid for Weston McKennie
Italian outlet CalcioMercato reports that Everton is targeting Weston McKennie as a potential signing. The 25-year-old midfielder is the subject of an offer from Everton, with Juventus open to selling him this summer. Juventus had previously attempted to offload McKennie to Aston Villa as part of the Douglas Luiz deal.
The report indicates that a “tempting proposal” has been made, but an agreement between the two clubs has yet to be reached.
An Uncharacteristic Risk from Kevin Thelwell
Everton’s financial troubles can be traced to several key figures and poor decisions. Previous executives, Marcel Brands and Steve Walsh, made costly mistakes by pursuing high-profile players who failed to deliver and consumed large portions of the budget.
Players such as Andre Gomes, Yerry Mina, Theo Walcott, and Alex Iwobi were brought in from big clubs, commanded high wages, and had minimal impact on the team. Everton’s strategy of offering lengthy, lucrative contracts was used to attract these players to their struggling side.
McKennie, while not exactly fitting the profile of these past signings, represents a deviation from Kevin Thelwell’s recent approach. The American international has had a challenging Premier League stint with Leeds United, who were relegated, and his performances with Juventus have also been underwhelming.
At this point in their rebuilding process, Everton might be better served by exploring other options rather than taking a risk on McKennie, given his mixed track record in recent seasons.
