Report: Leeds United Player Seeks £70k/week for European Club Transfer

Marseille is considering Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier for their number one spot, but two major factors are hindering the move.

Major player sales are not currently on Daniel Farke’s and the 49ers’ agenda, despite parting ways with Archie Gray earlier this month.

However, links persist regarding key players potentially leaving for Premier League and European clubs.

There are contrasting reports about Illan Meslier’s future, recently linked with a move to join Roberto De Zerbi’s new project at Marseille. L’Equipe reports that Meslier is on a four-man shortlist to become Marseille’s new number one as Pau Lopez prepares to leave. Also on the list are former Nottingham Forest stopper Brice Samba, Filip Jorgensen, and Alvaro Valles.

Valles seems the most likely to join, with reports indicating an £8.4 million agreement between Las Palmas and Marseille.

Despite his experience under Marcelo Bielsa, admired by De Zerbi, Meslier’s signing is proving difficult. One issue is his reluctance to move to Marseille this summer; the other is his ‘huge’ salary demands. According to the report, Meslier wants a wage similar to Steve Mandanda’s peak salary at OM, around €83,000-per-week (£70,000-per-week) during 2019/20.

Considering potential player sales this summer, Farke should be cautious about losing starters. However, losing Meslier wouldn’t be a major issue if he’s replaced promptly, as the money saved could secure a fitting replacement.
