Martí Cifuentes departed Swedish club Hammarby in October 2023 to take the reins at Queens Park Rangers (QPR), and he managed to keep the London outfit in the Championship for two consecutive campaigns.

In his first season, he steered the R’s to an 18th-place finish before guiding them to 15th in the 2024/25 season. Despite these stabilising results, Cifuentes’ time at Loftus Road ended in controversy.

In April, QPR placed Cifuentes on gardening leave after reports emerged that his representatives had held talks with West Bromwich Albion regarding their then-vacant managerial role.

The move was perceived as a breach of loyalty by some at QPR, and his departure from the club was officially confirmed the following month.

Ironically, West Brom did not include the Spaniard on their final shortlist, ultimately choosing Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach Ryan Mason to replace Tony Mowbray.

According to journalist John Percy, he has “emerged as a strong contender” to succeed Ruud van Nistelrooy at Leicester City.

Jordan accused the 41-year-old of showing disloyalty and disrespect to the club that had given him his opportunity in English football.

“If you’re at Queens Park Rangers and you’re batting your eyelids at other people and wanting to get out of the door, then you do have an element of disloyalty about you, don’t you?” Jordan said during a broadcast.

“That’s why QPR took action against him. He was consequenced.”

Jordan suggested that Leicester might seek to recoup the £500,000 fee through reduced wages for Cifuentes. “If indeed he’s going to make a contribution towards it, I imagine they’ll pay him less of a salary,” he added.

“Rather than having to pony up any money, it’ll be taken out of his upside, which is the salary he’ll be getting at Leicester, if indeed they want him.”

The pundit also drew comparisons with other managers whose conduct during job changes he found questionable.

“That’s why I had issues with Marco Silva, and that’s why I had the issues I had at the time with Gary Rowett,” Jordan continued. “I think there’s a way to operate.”

He contrasted Cifuentes’ handling of his exit with the likes of Brentford boss Thomas Frank. “No one would say that Thomas Frank being available and having an ear for Tottenham was anything other than the fact he’s done his job at Brentford, there was an opportunity, and everyone leaves amicably.”

“When you don’t do that and you disrespect those who have given you an opportunity and you show disloyalty, that’s the reason why you get my reaction,” Jordan concluded.

Despite the criticism, Cifuentes now finds himself with an opportunity to manage a club with Premier League ambitions.

Although his final months at QPR were marred by controversy, his early success in helping the club avoid relegation earned him praise.

Some supporters remain disappointed by his departure but acknowledge the improvement he brought.

Now potentially stepping into the hot seat at Leicester, Cifuentes will face high expectations and scrutiny from the outset.

After an underwhelming conclusion to his QPR tenure, the Spaniard has a major point to prove.
