Newcastle line up £60m move for Lucas Bergvall to strengthen midfield rebuild

Newcastle United are making gradual progress in the transfer market as Eddie Howe looks to complete a squad capable of competing for the European places during the 2026/27 Premier League season.

With the new campaign less than a month away, the Magpies will begin at home against Liverpool and will be eager to prove they remain among England’s strongest sides after an inconsistent year.

The club have already reshaped parts of the squad this summer.

Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona before the World Cup was quickly addressed with the arrival of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim in a deal worth £43m. However, midfield remains Howe’s biggest concern.

Newcastle cashed in on Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £100m transfer, while captain Bruno Guimaraes continues to attract strong interest from Arsenal.

Losing both players would leave a major gap in the heart of the team despite the arrivals of promising youngsters Aladji Bamba and Seun Steur.

Although both are regarded as exciting prospects, neither possesses the experience required to anchor Newcastle’s midfield over a demanding Premier League season.

Howe still has Joelinton available, but the club know another proven option may be needed, particularly if Guimaraes departs.

According to reports from Sports Boom, Newcastle are preparing a fresh £60m bid for Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall after seeing an earlier £46m offer rejected.

The Sweden international has reportedly submitted a transfer request, making personal terms unlikely to be an obstacle.

Bergvall would fit Newcastle’s long-term recruitment strategy while also offering immediate quality.

Despite being only 20, he has already made 78 appearances for Tottenham and gained valuable Premier League experience under difficult circumstances.

Renowned for his technical quality, composure and athleticism, Bergvall is equally effective on and off the ball.

He completed 62.5% of his dribble attempts last season while averaging just over two tackles per game, highlighting his ability to contribute in both attacking and defensive phases.

If Newcastle secure his signature, Bergvall could become a key figure in Howe’s midfield rebuild.

Whether Guimaraes stays or leaves, the Swedish talent appears capable of making an immediate impact while developing into one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders in the years ahead.
