Report: Tottenham’s New Interest Could Deal Another Major Transfer Blow to Leeds United
After losing Crysencio Summerville to West Ham over the weekend, Leeds are unsurprisingly in the market for a winger who can replace the Dutchman’s goalscoring ability and overall star quality.
It remains to be seen who they will sign before August 30, but the club is making a considerable effort this week.
The Telegraph reported on Monday that Leeds are looking to make a move for Norwich City winger Jon Rowe, with a £7 million offer said to be imminent.
Meanwhile, the Canaries have already sold their star man Gabriel Sara to Galatasaray, which might strengthen their stance on such an offer, although it appears to be somewhat short.
Rowe scored 12 goals and assisted two last season in the Championship. He currently has a year left on his contract, with his club holding the option for another year.
Having previously poached Archie Gray from Leeds for £40 million, Tottenham could be set to deliver another transfer blow to Leeds regarding Rowe’s future.
According to the Chronicle (7/8, pages 46 & 47), Spurs have been keeping tabs on the Norwich star for a few months now:
“Rowe is attracting interest from Leeds United with a view to replacing Crysencio Summerville and has caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur in recent months.
A Three Lions youth international valued in the region of £15-20m, Leeds’ opening offer of £7m suggests Norwich could be talked into lowering their asking price.”
Norwich, like every club in this division, needs money through sales to keep themselves active in the transfer market, and the deal for Sara might not suffice due to the obscene instalments laid out.
Rowe appears to be a top target for Leeds, and as the report indicates, Leeds’ belief that £7 million is a feasible opening offer speaks volumes.
The 49ers wouldn’t make such a bid if they didn’t think it would make progress on Rowe.
Tottenham’s interest wouldn’t be a surprise either, as they are investing in a strong young core, and Rowe could likely hit the ground running under Ange Postecoglou.
