Everton step up search for a right-back with transfer deadline looming

Jake O’Brien has emerged as Everton’s first-choice option on the right side of defence, with the Irishman impressing David Moyes since stepping into the role.

However, questions remain over depth in that position.

Club captain Seamus Coleman continues to struggle with injuries, while Nathan Patterson looks increasingly likely to depart the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

That leaves Everton needing reinforcements before the transfer window shuts, though identifying the right candidate is the real challenge. One potential solution being floated is Barcelona youngster Hector Fort.

This debate has drawn input from iconic commentator Ian Darke, who shared his thoughts exclusively with Goodison News.

Hector Fort and Maitland-Niles linked with Everton

The Toffees have been linked with Lyon defender and former Arsenal utility man Ainsley Maitland-Niles, as well as Fort.

Darke, however, has doubts over whether either truly meets the standards required for a top Premier League side, though he admits Fort offers intrigue.

“Fort grew up alongside Lamine Yamal at Barcelona’s academy and often had the task of marking him in training games at La Masia,” Darke explained.

“He’s stylish and has talent, though he’s currently behind Jules Kounde in the pecking order at Barça. He’s a good young full-back, but untested at the highest level.”

On Maitland-Niles, Darke added: “He’s a steady option, someone who has played over 100 games across Arsenal, West Brom and Southampton.

He can cover multiple positions and bring experience to the squad, but he’s never cemented himself as a Premier League regular.”

Darke concluded that while O’Brien has been doing well, Everton may still need “another body” for the role, even if the available targets are far from elite.

Fort: A gamble for the Toffees

Despite his promise, Fort’s lack of experience is a significant concern.

The 19-year-old has only made 30 senior appearances for Barcelona and registered just 579 minutes of La Liga action last season.

Even in a team that dominates possession, his numbers were underwhelming at both ends of the pitch.

Given that reality, Maitland-Niles may be the safer option.

His versatility, combined with his track record in English football, makes him a more reliable candidate if Everton decide to strengthen before the deadline.
