Report: West Ham Remain Keen on £30m+ Striker as European Club Looks to Sell
According to Foot Mercato, West Ham United remain "very interested" in Tammy Abraham as Roma seek to sell the striker this summer.
A French outlet reported on August 23 that Roma has been eager to offload the 26-year-old England forward, Tammy Abraham, throughout the summer transfer window due to his hefty salary impacting their finances.
Abraham remains a target for West Ham, who are interested in bringing the striker back to the Premier League after initial inquiries from AC Milan and Juventus regarding his availability.
Roma spent £34.8 million to acquire him from Chelsea in 2021, and despite his injury problems last season, the club’s new sports management team is hopeful of recouping as much of that fee as possible.
Tammy Abraham’s Potential Transfer Could Be a Risk for West Ham
Although Abraham has a track record of scoring goals at nearly every club he’s played for, the decline in both his playing time and performance at Roma’s Stadio Olimpico should raise concerns for West Ham.
The 26-year-old’s goal tally dropped significantly from 27 in his first season at Roma—a rate better than one goal every other game—to just nine goals in 54 appearances the following season, a worrying decrease at the same competitive level.
Moreover, with Roma looking to recover most of the £34.8 million they paid Chelsea three years ago, spending over £27 million on another new striker could overcrowd West Ham’s attacking options [Calcio Mercato, August 5].
This concern arises because West Ham has already spent a similar amount to sign 31-year-old Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund this summer, and he is expected to be a primary choice in their attack.
With experienced forwards Michail Antonio and Danny Ings still part of the squad, adding Abraham at a substantial cost might be excessive for West Ham, even though he is considerably younger than their current attacking options.
