On 31 December, it was reported that West Ham, alongside Tottenham, Everton, and Crystal Palace, are targeting Lyon midfielder Maxence Caqueret, with Lyon facing a financial crisis and in urgent need of funds.
Lyon is currently at risk of a transfer ban and potential relegation from Ligue 1 due to their unstable finances, making the opportunity for West Ham to sign Caqueret, who earns £54,000 per week, for a bargain price likely.
While West Ham already has sufficient midfield options, there is a clear need to improve the quality in this area, particularly since it was a position they didn’t heavily invest in over the summer.
Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui brought in Guido Rodriguez and Carlos Soler from Real Betis and PSG, respectively.
However, Rodriguez, who arrived on a free transfer, struggled to adjust to Premier League pace and lost his spot in the lineup, while Soler is only on loan with no permanent transfer clause.
