Former Rangers Star Dubbed ‘New Prince’ After Fans Once Called for His Exit

John Lundstram, 31, has emerged as a key figure for Trabzonspor this season after joining in the summer following his departure from Rangers.

The English midfielder arrived alongside Borna Barišić, though the defender has since moved on loan to Leganés.

However, Lundstram initially struggled to settle in Turkey, facing harsh criticism from fans who even called for his contract to be terminated.

His performances early in the season were met with frustration, and leaked comments from club technical director Şenol Güneş revealed doubts about his signing.

Güneş questioned the need for Lundstram, describing him as “heavy and cumbersome” and suggesting an exit would be best for both parties.

Despite the tough start, Lundstram has since turned things around, becoming a crucial player for Trabzonspor.

He has cemented his place in the starting lineup and has even filled in at centre-back when required.

Turkish outlet Haber61 has praised his resurgence, calling him “the new prince” of Trabzonspor and one of the club’s most trusted players.

So far this season, Lundstram has made 31 appearances, scoring three goals.

Following Trabzonspor’s 5-2 victory over Rizespor, he reflected on his versatility and growing confidence.

“Wherever my coach wants me to play, I play,” he said. “Centre-back, number 6, number 8 – I’m enjoying every moment here.”

He also spoke about his relationship with Güneş, crediting him for his adaptation. “He made it very clear why I play in my good times and why I don’t in my bad times.”
