Review: West Ham Considering Player-Coach Role in Potential New Transfer Deal
Frank McAvennie suggests that Tim Krul might be considered for a player-coach position following West Ham's interest in the goalkeeper.
According to Alan Nixon’s report on 16th June, West Ham United is interested in securing a deal with veteran goalkeeper Tim Krul once his contract with Luton Town expires this summer.
While Julen Lopetegui views Krul as a potential solution to their third-choice goalkeeper issues, it is understood that Krul has options as a first-choice goalkeeper from other clubs.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Frank McAvennie believes Krul may need to accept a dual role at London Stadium if he joins this summer.
“If they bring Tim Krul in, I think he’ll be a coach as well as a keeper,” McAvennie stated. “He’s never going to challenge for the number one spot so he’d be coming in as a coach. That wouldn’t be a bad idea given his form and CV.”
Considering Alphonse Areola is likely to remain West Ham’s first choice and Lukasz Fabianski is still contracted, Krul may find it challenging to secure regular playing time.
Wes Foderingham is also being considered, with West Ham scheduling a medical for the former Sheffield United goalkeeper (per Fabrizio Romano).
At 36 years old, Krul must recognize that his playing opportunities next season could be limited unless he considers moving to a lower league or abroad.
Despite this, Krul’s extensive experience at both club and international levels makes him an intriguing prospect for summer signing, although it may not generate significant excitement among fans.
