Rangers set their sights on Manchester City prospect Callum Doyle in transfer chase.
Callum Doyle already carries a wealth of experience despite being just 21, having enjoyed several productive loan spells in the Championship.
His versatility across defence, capable of operating both as a centre-back and at left-back, made him an attractive option for Russell Martin at Rangers, who are currently short of depth in those areas.
However, the Glasgow club have now suffered a setback in their pursuit of the defender, as an £8 million deal has been struck elsewhere.
According to Jordan Campbell of The Athletic, Rangers have been beaten to Doyle’s signature by newly-promoted Championship side Wrexham, who have secured an agreement to bring him in.
Both Rangers and Sheffield United were keen to land the England youth international, but Doyle opted for Wrexham due largely to location preferences.
His career to date has included loan stints at Coventry City, Leicester City, Norwich City, and Sunderland, where he has amassed 98 Championship appearances, scoring once and providing nine assists.
Although Rangers were keen, a permanent move north of the border always appeared unlikely, particularly at the £8m asking price, unless a loan arrangement had been possible.
Doyle was viewed primarily as a left centre-back, though Martin might have considered him as a defensive left-back alternative, contrasting James Tavernier’s attacking presence on the right.
Rangers’ need for reinforcements at left-back has only grown more pressing following reports that Jefte could be heading to Palmeiras.
Even before that potential departure, strengthening the position was a clear requirement.
Max Aarons’ struggles when shifted into an unfamiliar role at left-back highlighted the need for a natural option, while John Souttar’s inconsistent form has created further defensive uncertainty.
In this context, Doyle could have provided both immediate stability and a long-term solution, filling multiple roles across the backline.
Missing out on him represents not just a transfer blow but also a lost opportunity to address several squad issues at once.
As the window edges towards its close, Rangers face mounting pressure to deliver reinforcements.
