A similar exodus is expected this summer. Some will leave voluntarily, unwilling to play in the Championship, while others will be sold to raise much-needed funds for the club.
Ruud van Nistelrooy believes this transition should already be underway, but progress has stalled due to a lack of clarity and direction from the club’s hierarchy.
He has yet to receive the “alignment” he needs to properly plan for the future.
When asked if more players had already played their final game at the King Power Stadium, van Nistelrooy said: “We have to wait and see how that develops.
It’s clear with Jamie and a few others whose contracts are ending. But for those still under contract, the future remains uncertain.”
He emphasized the importance of starting the rebuilding process promptly: “You need to begin solving the puzzle—figuring out who’s leaving and who needs replacing. That’s a process I would’ve liked to start much earlier.”
It’s possible that Saturday’s match was van Nistelrooy’s last at the King Power as well. His own future is uncertain, with the club reportedly eyeing new managerial candidates ahead of their Championship return.
Despite the speculation, van Nistelrooy is ending the season strongly. The 2-0 victory over Ipswich marked City’s first three-game unbeaten streak of the campaign. He remains confident in his approach.
“I believe in my methods,” he said. “When you work consistently in a certain way, I’m convinced it will lead to results. Unfortunately, those results didn’t come soon enough. That’s the hard part.”
