Okoli was heavily linked with a move away in January, but he remained at the King Power Stadium and made his first start under Van Nistelrooy.
Despite limited opportunities since the Dutchman’s arrival, the 23-year-old showcased his quality with an excellent defensive display, including a crucial goal-line clearance.
His inclusion came at the expense of Jannik Vestergaard, who was left out due to a minor injury, according to journalist Rob Tanner.
However, many felt the towering Dane deserved to be dropped regardless.
He endured a dreadful performance in the 4-0 defeat to Everton, where Leicester’s defence was repeatedly exposed.
In truth, the 32-year-old has struggled all season, with opponents consistently exploiting his lack of pace and mobility.
In contrast, Okoli’s agility and speed made Leicester’s defence look far more solid, strengthening the argument that he should start against Arsenal.
Time for Leicester to Move On from Vestergaard
Although Vestergaard played a key role in Leicester’s Championship-winning campaign last season, his physical limitations have been a growing concern in the Premier League.
Van Nistelrooy should consider offloading the experienced centre-back in the summer to free up valuable wages.
Vestergaard currently earns £60,000 per week, making him the club’s eighth-highest earner.
Given his advancing age and evident decline, selling the Danish international would be the best move for Leicester, allowing them to reinvest in a more dynamic and reliable defensive option.
