Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed on Sunday, with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy pointing to a lack of January signings as a major factor behind their downfall.

The club’s poor form had made relegation likely for months, and van Nistelrooy believes the failure to strengthen in the winter window was crucial.

Due to fears of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, Leicester made just one signing—right-back Woyo Coulibaly from Parma for £3m.

He has only started once. The club also couldn’t add a Premier League loan player because Odsonne Edouard’s season-long loan had no break clause.

Van Nistelrooy revealed that when he initially took over, he had been assured that new signings would be possible.

However, the situation changed as January approached. He was later informed that strengthening the squad would be very difficult.

Despite those constraints, van Nistelrooy had hoped to bring in at least two players, including a right-sided winger to cover for injured Abdul Fatawu.

Without reinforcements and working with the existing squad, he struggled to earn the points needed to keep Leicester in the top flight.

“In the winter window, there wasn’t anything possible to strengthen and that’s what the team really needed,” van Nistelrooy said.

“The gap is big with the promoted sides and the other 17 teams. I felt it was important to strengthen the team in certain positions.

“As you know, and I shared that with you, we had to adjust expectations in signing players. In the end it’s clear it was necessary, but not possible.”

The post-season review will likely focus on the January transfer window and how a lack of action may have sealed Leicester’s fate.
