Sandro Tonali has acknowledged that a return to Italy could happen one day, though he insists he remains content at Newcastle United for now.

The Italian midfielder, who joined the Magpies from AC Milan in a £55 million transfer in 2023, has made a strong impression at St James’ Park.

Despite his success in England, rumours have continued to link the 25-year-old with a move back to Serie A, with Juventus reportedly monitoring his situation closely.

When asked about the possibility of returning to his homeland, Tonali didn’t rule it out entirely. Speaking to Vivo Azzurro, he explained: “You can never know what will happen.

I tell everyone it’s possible. I’m not closing the door on Italy; it’s my country.

Maybe not now because I’ve found my balance at Newcastle, but the league is improving, and the level of competition is rising.”

His comments came shortly after he was spotted in Milan meeting with his agent, Giuseppe Riso, during the international break.

That encounter sparked widespread speculation in Italy that Tonali could be plotting a move to Juventus, given the Turin club’s long-standing admiration for him.

However, Tonali still has three years left on his Newcastle contract and has publicly stated that he’s not seeking a transfer any time soon.

For now, it seems Juventus’ hopes of luring him away are premature.

The midfielder has been in fine form this season, playing a crucial role under Eddie Howe.

His influence in the middle of the park has earned him comparisons to some of the Premier League’s top midfielders.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes even went as far as to claim that Tonali is better than Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo—both valued at over £100 million.

Tonali’s performances certainly back up that praise. Since joining Newcastle, he has made 66 appearances, contributing seven goals and five assists.

He also played a key role in the Magpies’ Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool earlier this year.

Currently on international duty, Tonali is preparing for Italy’s World Cup qualifiers. The Azzurri are set to face Estonia on Saturday, October 11 at the Lillekula Stadium, before taking on Israel on Tuesday, October 14 at the Bluenergy Stadium.

Once those fixtures conclude, Tonali will rejoin Newcastle ahead of their Premier League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, October 18.
