Given his limited involvement in league matches, it was widely expected that the FA Cup would provide Igor with a chance to start and stake his claim.

Instead, he was left out of the squad entirely, failing even to make the substitutes’ bench.

This decision feels even more puzzling when considering the inconsistent form of Max Kilman and West Ham’s wider defensive struggles this season.

The lack of trust shown in Igor suggests his time at the club could soon come to an end.

There is a growing sense that his loan spell may be terminated early in January, and based on what supporters have seen so far, it is hard to argue that his departure would leave a significant void.

What makes the situation more confusing is Igor’s previous standing at Brighton.

During his first two Premier League campaigns with the Seagulls, he was a fairly regular presence, only seeing his minutes reduced as the club’s ambitions increased.

That decline ultimately led to his loan move, yet his near-total absence at West Ham remains difficult to explain.

The situation also reflects poorly on the optimism expressed by Graham Potter earlier in the season.

Back in September, Potter praised Igor as an experienced, Premier League-proven defender who possessed qualities capable of strengthening the squad and complementing the players already at the club. So far, those promised attributes have yet to materialise on the pitch.

With each passing week, it feels increasingly likely that West Ham supporters may never truly see what Igor Julio was supposed to bring to the side.
