West Ham are targeting a new striker ahead of the January transfer window in a bid to strengthen their attacking firepower.
According to former West Ham United and Manchester United senior scout Mick Brown, Nuno Espirito Santo is firmly focused on recruiting a “top-class” striker as he looks to reshape his West Ham side.
Brown, who remains well connected at both of his former clubs, shared his insight in an exclusive conversation with Football Insider, outlining the Hammers’ growing urgency to strengthen their attacking options.
Brown’s comments follow his earlier revelation to Football Insider on 8 December, when he claimed West Ham have concerns over Callum Wilson’s ability to consistently lead the line because of his ongoing fitness issues.
While the 33-year-old striker is still part of the club’s plans, there is an increasing sense behind the scenes that West Ham need a more dependable and ruthless number nine to spearhead their attack.
Nuno’s determination to bring in a new forward has been further fuelled by Football Insider’s recent report that West Ham are open to selling Niclas Fullkrug, with the German striker keen on a return to the Bundesliga.
That potential departure would leave the Hammers even lighter in attack, intensifying the need for reinforcements in January.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 7 December that West Ham are prepared to spend around £20million on a new striker when the transfer window opens.
Brown, who boasts more than a decade of experience at Manchester United during one of their most successful eras, insists the club are already laying the groundwork to identify suitable targets.
“West Ham need a top-class striker,” Brown explained. “Jarrod Bowen can chip in with goals from wide areas, but they can’t expect him to deliver every single week.
At the same time, they can’t rely fully on Fullkrug or Wilson either.
They want someone who can lead the line and consistently score goals, but that’s much easier said than done.
“In today’s market, you have to be convinced and ready to act when opportunities arise.
They’ll be monitoring the situation closely and making sure they’re aware of any players who suddenly become available.
The recruitment team will be working hard behind the scenes to find options that fit both their budget and Nuno’s preferred style of play, because this is one of their key priorities.
“Signing a striker is never easy, and doing it in January is even more challenging.
But if you get it right, there are deals to be done, and that’s what West Ham will be hoping for.”
Brown has also previously told Football Insider that Nuno wants to refresh his squad, with up to five positions targeted for improvement.
Given West Ham’s lack of goals and their ongoing battle near the bottom end of the table, the striker position has become especially important.
In November, Football Insider revealed that West Ham have been tracking Norwich City forward Josh Sargent, with scouts sent to monitor his performances.
The club are also keeping a close eye on Troy Parrott, who has impressed this season for AZ Alkmaar and the Republic of Ireland.
Both players are among several realistic options on West Ham’s shortlist as they look to support Nuno within a restricted budget.
