Marti Cifuentes outlines Leicester City’s transfer plans midway between the summer and January windows
Leicester City are expected to offload several senior players during the January transfer window, with manager Marti Cifuentes admitting that the current size of the squad is “killing opportunities” for the club’s most promising youngsters.
Streamlining the group was a key discussion point in the summer, and although some progress was made, Cifuentes remains eager to trim the numbers further in the new year.
The Foxes currently have a 31-man senior squad, and with experienced players dominating selection, academy graduates have struggled to get a look-in.
Of the club’s teenage talents, only Jeremy Monga has featured regularly this season. Midfielder Louis Page has not appeared since the opening month of the campaign, while England youth internationals Bade Aluko and Jake Evans are still waiting for their first-team debuts.
Ben Nelson, who impressed on loan at Oxford United last season, has also failed to make the bench in recent weeks.
Cifuentes has made it clear that giving more room to emerging talents may require player departures in January.
“It’s always important to find the right balance because, in my opinion, having too many players kills opportunities for academy players,” he said.
“Some of the young lads are knocking on the door and I want to create space for them. It’s something we need to consider.
We’ve been fortunate with injuries, so that helps, but we’ll discuss this with the club to shape the kind of squad we want moving forward.”
While outgoings are likely, Leicester could also explore strengthening certain areas of the team.
Cifuentes has already held preliminary talks with the club’s recruitment department to assess potential needs ahead of the window.
“We have regular meetings with the club,” he explained. “It’s still early, but we’re continuing to work and assess what’s best for the team.
Every transfer window provides an opportunity to improve, and that will always be our mindset. We’re only at the initial stages, but planning ahead is essential.”
