Newcastle United forward William Osula has been sidelined for close to two months after suffering an ankle injury, halting what had been an encouraging start to the campaign for the 22-year-old.

Osula began the season brightly, registering three goals across competitions and playing a decisive role in Bruno Guimarães’ late winner against Fulham in October.

However, those early positives were followed by an ankle issue that has kept him out of action ever since.

Head coach Eddie Howe previously confirmed that the Danish striker had been attempting to play through the pain, even being named on the bench for Newcastle’s 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club before pulling out shortly before kick-off.

Since then, Osula has not featured as the club continues to assess the problem.

Howe admitted last month that the injury was not progressing as expected, explaining that Newcastle were unhappy with how Osula’s ankle was responding and that further internal discussions were required before any return date could be considered.

Osula’s fitness concerns have coincided with renewed uncertainty over his future.

Signed from Sheffield United for an initial £10 million in 2024, he endured a frustrating debut season on Tyneside, failing to start a Premier League match despite remaining largely fit.

That lack of game time almost resulted in a summer departure, with Aston Villa and Eintracht Frankfurt both showing strong interest.

Villa were prevented from completing a deal due to UEFA financial regulations after earlier business with Newcastle, while a proposed move to Frankfurt collapsed late on deadline day despite being close to completion.

Howe later revealed that Newcastle had been open to a loan exit to aid Osula’s development but ultimately decided to keep him, especially after Yoane Wissa picked up an injury.

Now, with Wissa back fit and scoring, Osula faces increased competition for places even if he returns to full fitness.

Reports from Germany suggest Frankfurt are again keen, with claims that Osula has agreed personal terms on a long-term deal.

However, other sources indicate the proposal would be a loan with an option to buy, and Newcastle are said to be downplaying the likelihood of a January exit.
