Newcastle United are reportedly considering a future move for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, according to Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke.
O’Rourke revealed that Newcastle “could sign the ‘huge’ striker for well below his £87million release clause,” with sources inside the club suggesting that they will continue to keep close tabs on the player ahead of upcoming transfer windows.
Aghehowa, 21, remains tied to Porto until 2029, but Newcastle are optimistic that any potential deal could be reached for a fee considerably lower than his release clause.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke noted: “I don’t see them going out and signing Aghehowa in January.
He’s under a long-term contract, and any interested club will hope to pay less than the £87million clause.”
The report also states that Newcastle made a formal approach for the Spanish striker during the summer window while seeking a replacement for Alexander Isak.
However, a move failed to materialize, prompting the Magpies to pursue German forward Nick Woltemade instead.
Despite that, Newcastle remain attentive to Aghehowa’s progress in Portugal and could revisit the situation if circumstances change.
Currently, the club are said to be satisfied with their attacking options, especially following Woltemade’s impressive start to life at St. James’ Park and Yoane Wissa’s expected return from injury.
Even so, if Wissa’s comeback is delayed or his form dips upon return, Newcastle may accelerate their pursuit of another striker — with Aghehowa understood to be among their top long-term targets.
