Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping a close watch on Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen as they plan ahead for the January transfer window.

The North London club are understood to have shortlisted the experienced Germany international as a possible successor to Guglielmo Vicario, with a move potentially considered once the market reopens next month.

At 33, Ter Stegen is seen as a short-term but high-profile solution should Spurs decide to reshuffle their goalkeeping department.

Barcelona are said to be willing to listen to offers for Ter Stegen in January, particularly now that the goalkeeper has made his return from a prolonged injury layoff.

The German shot-stopper recently made his first appearance of the campaign, starting in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey victory over Guadalajara on Tuesday.

It marked his first competitive start for the Catalans since May, following months on the sidelines.

Reports from TEAMtalk suggest Tottenham are preparing for another active transfer window, with head coach Thomas Frank keen to strengthen key areas of his squad.

One of his main priorities is believed to be the signing of a new goalkeeper, amid growing concerns surrounding Vicario’s recent form.

Vicario has come under increasing scrutiny this season, with critics pointing to a series of costly errors and a perceived dip in confidence.

As a result, Ter Stegen has emerged as a realistic option, especially with Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick now favouring summer arrival Joan Garcia as his first-choice goalkeeper.

With former Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczęsny currently acting as backup, Ter Stegen has effectively slipped to third in the pecking order at Camp Nou.

This situation has reportedly made him available for a January move, should the right offer arrive.

Injury issues have significantly disrupted Ter Stegen’s recent career, with the goalkeeper managing only nine appearances for Barcelona since the beginning of last season.

Despite this, he remains highly regarded within the game and has previously been described as “one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”

His most recent outing for Germany came during the Nations League finals in June.

Tottenham’s plans to bring in a new goalkeeper could also be influenced by Vicario’s long-term future.
