Reports suggest that Dutch manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is unlikely to remain in charge at Leicester City by the time the 2025/26 season begins, with the club set to return to the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy, who previously impressed during his time at PSV Eindhoven and had a short spell as interim boss at Manchester United, has struggled to replicate that success at the King Power Stadium.

According to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, the club is already drawing up plans for his succession.

Among the early candidates for the job are England Under-21s coach Lee Carsley, Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl, and former Southampton boss Russell Martin.

Both Rohl and Martin have strong experience in the Championship, with Martin notably earning promotion with Southampton last season, alongside Leicester.

However, a new name has emerged in the form of Bristol City manager Liam Manning. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Manning is now on Leicester’s radar.

He has guided Bristol City into the play-off positions this season, helping them achieve their second-highest points total (63) since earning promotion in 2015.

Jacobs also reported that Van Nistelrooy is expected to depart before next season begins. Manning’s future could become clearer based on the Robins’ play-off results.

If he leads his team past Sheffield United and to a win at Wembley, thus securing Premier League promotion, Leicester may be hesitant or unable to lure him away.

With only three fixtures left before Leicester’s brief return to the Premier League ends, the club is already preparing for next steps.

Despite winning the Championship last year, their top-flight campaign has been an uphill battle. Their relegation was confirmed with a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool three weeks ago.

While Manning has done a commendable job with Bristol City, his appointment at Leicester feels uncertain.

He lacks the experience and immediate availability of some of the other potential candidates.

Rohl, who is expected to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer, has received praise for saving the club from relegation last season and guiding them to a mid-table finish this term.

He is reportedly open to taking the Leicester job.

Meanwhile, Carsley brings experience from working with England’s top youth prospects, and Martin, who is currently without a club, has already proven he can secure Premier League promotion.

Given that Manning could secure a place in the top flight with Bristol City just one day before Leicester’s season concludes, it may complicate any potential move.

As a result, the timing and circumstances may prevent a smooth transition for either party if Leicester pursue Manning as their next manager.
