Leicester City Weigh Up Move for Veteran Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic Amid Goalkeeping Shake-Up

Leicester City and Southampton have both initiated contact with veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who is set to become a free agent at the end of June following Everton’s announcement that he will not be offered a new contract.

The 38-year-old’s potential availability has sparked interest, particularly from the Foxes, who are actively seeking reinforcements between the sticks this summer.

The need for a new goalkeeper at Leicester has become increasingly urgent after the departures of Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen, both of whom have left the King Power Stadium.

With the goalkeeping department undergoing a major overhaul, Begovic is being considered as a short-term solution to provide depth, experience, and leadership during this transitional phase.

Begovic joined Everton in the summer of 2021 but managed only 12 appearances in total for the Toffees.

Most recently, he spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Championship side Queens Park Rangers, where he was a regular starter and played a key role throughout the season.

Speaking to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former professional footballer Don Goodman was asked whether Leicester should pursue Begovic or seek a younger alternative.

Goodman responded, “At 38, Asmir Begovic still has something to offer, especially as a goalkeeper.

It’s a position where experience often outweighs youth. However, whether he’d be a first-choice option at Leicester is another question.”

Goodman added, “He played every game for QPR in the season before last, and then spent a year sitting on Everton’s bench without game time. At this stage of his career, he’ll surely want to be on the pitch as much as possible.

But at Leicester, that opportunity might not come easily. That said, as a presence in the squad—an experienced, respected professional—he could still be a valuable asset.”

With West Ham reportedly showing interest in Leicester’s current No. 1 Mads Hermansen, and the club’s openness to selling the 24-year-old Dane due to financial constraints related to Profit and Sustainability rules, the Foxes may soon find themselves with limited options.

Currently, Jakub Stolarczyk appears to be the only remaining senior goalkeeper at the club.

However, the Polish shot-stopper, despite being 24 years old, has made just 20 senior appearances since graduating from Leicester’s academy in 2020.

Given these circumstances, the club may be compelled to focus on smart, cost-effective signings this summer, and the free agent market represents a realistic and appealing route.

Begovic’s availability and experience could make him a prime candidate for a short-term deal.

Over the course of his career, Begovic has amassed over 250 appearances in the Premier League, close to 100 games in the Championship, and has played at the highest levels of European football, including the Champions League and Europa League.

His trophy cabinet includes both a Premier League and FA Cup winners’ medal, adding further credibility to his pedigree.

Bringing in a player with his wealth of experience could serve Leicester well—not only as insurance between the posts but also as a mentor for younger goalkeepers like Stolarczyk or any new additions the club might target.

His leadership and professionalism could play a key role in stabilising the dressing room and supporting the club’s rebuild during a pivotal summer.
