Jonathan David Edging Closer to Napoli Move Despite Premier League Interest

Jonathan David looks set to reject a move to the Premier League in favour of heading to Italy, with reports suggesting the striker is nearing a decision on his next club.

The Canadian international recently confirmed that he will be leaving Lille when his contract expires on June 30, attracting attention from a number of top European clubs.

David joined Lille from Belgian side Gent in 2020 and has since become one of the most consistent strikers in Europe.

Over the course of his time in France, he has scored 109 goals in 232 matches, making a strong case for a move to a bigger league.

While Newcastle United were among the early contenders to sign the 25-year-old, it now appears that Napoli are leading the race for his signature.

According to Sky Sports News, the reigning Serie A champions are closing in on an agreement with David’s representatives.

The report also reveals that Juventus, who have recently undergone a change in leadership, have attempted to intervene and hold talks with the striker’s camp in an effort to lure him to Turin.

“Napoli are close to agreeing terms with the representatives of Lille forward Jonathan David,” Sky reported.

“However, officials from the new incoming board at Juventus have contacted David’s camp today and are also trying to do a deal for the player.

David will become a free agent when his contract at Lille officially expires next month. Inter Milan were also interested but were unable to reach an agreement.”

While interest from Premier League sides remains, none are currently in pole position.

Several English clubs, including those competing in next season’s Champions League, are keeping tabs on the situation and have requested updates.

Newcastle’s Search for a Striker Continues

Newcastle United are actively seeking reinforcements up front, particularly someone who can both support and compete with Alexander Isak.

With Callum Wilson’s future at St James’ Park uncertain—his contract expires next month—the Magpies are weighing their options.

One of the major challenges Newcastle face is convincing high-profile forwards to accept a backup role behind Isak. Salary demands also complicate the situation.

Recently, the club held discussions with Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap. However, the 22-year-old has decided to join Chelsea, who are prepared to activate his £30 million release clause.

Manchester United and Everton were also reportedly in talks with Delap’s representatives.

Last summer, Newcastle brought in Will Osula from Sheffield United for £15 million, but the 21-year-old has yet to start a Premier League game. Questions remain about whether he’s ready to take on a more prominent role.

As for Wilson, while his departure isn’t confirmed, signs point in that direction.

Newcastle opted not to trigger a one-year extension on his contract and have instead opened talks over a more performance-based deal.
