According to Claret & Hugh, Kretinsky could advocate strongly for Mourinho’s appointment. However, the report stresses that the Portuguese coach has largely been ruled out by other members of the board, raising doubts over whether Kretinsky could persuade them to back the move.
Mourinho’s achievements speak for themselves. The 62-year-old has won league titles in England, Italy, and Spain, lifted the Champions League twice, and claimed the World’s Best Club Coach award on four occasions. His pedigree as a “natural winner” is unquestionable.
Yet, appointing him would be contentious. Mourinho’s ties to Chelsea and Tottenham would divide supporters, while his managerial aura has dimmed in recent years.
He was dismissed by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy after just 17 months and most recently left Fenerbahçe without delivering silverware.
Nuno as the pragmatic choice
Given these concerns, some argue West Ham should look beyond Mourinho. Journalist Josh Bunting has previously praised the Portuguese coach’s winning mentality, but others highlight Nuno as a more sensible candidate.
The 51-year-old revived Nottingham Forest, steering them from relegation battles to European qualification.
Former footballer Karl Henry also lauded Nuno’s achievements at Wolverhampton Wanderers, emphasizing his ability to maximize limited resources.
