The message was clear: the former Arsenal man has fallen down the pecking order.

With his contract running until 2027, Newcastle may now look to move him on in the next transfer window to capitalise on his value before it diminishes further.

Willock’s story at St. James’ Park began promisingly. Signed permanently for £25 million in 2021 after a superb loan spell under Steve Bruce, he became an instant fan favourite.

During his loan stint, the energetic midfielder scored in seven consecutive Premier League matches, becoming the youngest player in league history to achieve that remarkable feat.

His performances earned him a long-term deal just months before the club’s Saudi-led takeover and Howe’s arrival.

However, the influx of new signings and rising competition in midfield have since limited his opportunities.

Willock was a regular starter during Newcastle’s impressive 2022–23 campaign, making 31 league starts as they secured Champions League qualification.

But injuries and new arrivals curtailed his progress — he managed only five starts in 2023–24 and 11 appearances overall.

This season, he’s featured for just 87 minutes in the league, and with recent events at Brighton serving as another indicator, it now seems inevitable that Willock’s once-promising Newcastle career is nearing its end.
