Fabian Schär’s long spell at Newcastle United looks increasingly likely to end in 2026, with Sky Germany reporting significant Bundesliga interest in the experienced Swiss centre-back.
The 33-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, is attracting attention from several German clubs, who are already said to be in discussions about bringing him back to the league he previously graced.
Schär has endured a frustrating campaign so far, making only four Premier League starts after slipping down Eddie Howe’s defensive hierarchy.
The summer signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan has pushed him out of the preferred pairing, leaving Schär on the fringes despite his long-standing importance to the squad.
Sky Germany suggest that his time on Tyneside “appears to be drawing to a close,” with a departure next summer considered the most probable scenario.
However, a January exit has not been ruled out. Early conversations are reportedly underway over a potential mid-season move to the Bundesliga, where Schär previously featured for Hoffenheim before joining Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruña back in 2018.
During his seven-year stay at St James’ Park, Schär has been a crucial figure, making 239 appearances and contributing 22 goals across all competitions.
He began the 2025/26 season as a starter, featuring in Newcastle’s first four matches before a head injury sidelined him for two fixtures.
Since recovering, his involvement has been minimal—just 75 minutes of league action—and he remained an unused substitute during the recent 3-1 defeat to Brentford.
Howe now favours the partnership of Thiaw and Sven Botman, leaving Schär and Jamaal Lascelles as backup options.
Both players are out of contract at the end of the season, and it is unclear whether Newcastle intend to open renewal talks.
Lascelles finds himself in a similar situation, having played only 19 Premier League minutes this term, with his last top-flight start dating back to December 2023.
Newcastle’s season as a whole has been underwhelming. With just three wins from 11 league matches, the team has struggled for momentum.
Their attacking output has been especially poor, registering only 11 goals—ranking them among the lowest-scoring sides in the division.
As they sit 14th heading into the November international break, the Magpies now prepare for a daunting return to action against Manchester City on 22 November.
