Emile Heskey believes Marti Cifuentes has not been given the proper backing to guide Leicester City back to the Premier League this season.

Although Leicester have hovered around the play-off places for much of the campaign, consecutive defeats have seen them drop to 10th ahead of Saturday’s home fixture against Blackburn Rovers at the King Power Stadium.

Cifuentes faced a difficult summer after arriving only a few weeks into pre-season, and the club managed to bring in just three outfield players.

Aaron Ramsey, Jordan James, and Julian Carranza all joined on loan during deadline day, leaving the Spaniard with limited options to shape the team to his liking.

Given those constraints, Heskey does not believe promotion is a realistic target. “When Leicester appointed Cifuentes, like with any manager, you have to give him the tools to build the side he wants,” Heskey told 10bet Casino.

“He’s got a young squad, even with the experience of someone like Harry Winks returning.

“He has a very specific playing style, but I’m not sure the current squad suits it. It’s not the right platform for promotion.

They probably need to focus on consolidating this season and then build for the future. Unfortunately, I don’t think promotion will happen this year.”

Instead, Heskey hopes Leicester will use this season to develop more of their academy talent. He highlighted the importance of following the pathway that helped him break through three decades ago.

Cifuentes has regularly turned to youngster Jeremy Monga, but Ben Nelson is yet to feature, while Jake Evans and Bade Aluko remain on the fringes.

“I think Cifuentes is doing okay, but I’d like to see more young players come through,” Heskey added. “It worked for me, and for players like Julian Joachim and Richard Smith before me.

That’s part of Leicester’s identity. But at the moment, Cifuentes seems to be spending most of his time firefighting.”
