Newcastle United face a challenging run of fixtures through the remainder of November, all before the demanding Christmas period intensifies the schedule.
Eddie Howe’s inconsistent side host Manchester City next, a match that will severely test a defence already struggling to cope with in-form forwards such as Erling Haaland.
That difficult encounter is followed by tough away trips to Marseille in the Champions League and Everton in the Premier League.
With pressure already building, Howe will need positive results to ease concerns about Newcastle’s direction.
One of the biggest issues behind Newcastle’s faltering form is the number of high-earning players who are failing to justify their wages.
In contrast, club captain Bruno Guimarães, the squad’s top earner on £160k per week, continues to lead by example despite not being at his sharpest in recent defeats.
His three league goals, including a crucial strike against Nottingham Forest, have been vital.
However, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon—both earning £150k per week—have struggled to make any attacking impact.
Across 16 combined Premier League appearances, neither has registered a goal or assist.
By comparison, club-record signing Nick Woltemade has justified his £69m fee and £132.5k weekly wage with four league goals.
New signing Anthony Elanga, on £100k per week after a £55m move, has also been criticised.
Analyst Raj Chohan branded the winger a “massive overpay”, with the Swede yet to score for Newcastle. Despite this, his age and early stage of adaptation may earn him patience.
Joe Willock, however, may not receive the same leniency.
Once a breakout star who scored in seven consecutive Premier League matches during his 2020/21 loan spell, Willock has struggled to maintain anything close to that level.
His decline has been stark: only two goals in 133 appearances since that explosive start. The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has described him as a “disappointment”, and he has played just 100 league minutes this season while still earning £80k per week.
Notably, summer signing Malick Thiaw makes less than Willock despite being a consistent starter in defence.
With Newcastle’s form stalling and the squad carrying too many underperforming high earners, Howe may soon need to phase Willock out—along with other past regulars—to steady the team’s trajectory.
